During our travels on Faial we were delighted to stumble across Casal do
Vulcao, one of the newest additions to the range of self-catering
accommodation on the island. This charming group of four restored stone
cottages is set in a rural lane on the edge of the nature reserve around the
impressive caldeira and just a short drive from Ponta dos Capelinhos, the
dramatic addition to the island created by the 1957/8 subterranean eruption.
The owners have carefully restored what was once a farmhouse and its
outbuildings and the traditional stone exteriors, enlivened by vibrant red
shutters, hide comfortable, modern and stylish accommodation suitable for
couples or families wishing to explore the natural beauty of the island from a
peaceful base.
The original house is arranged on two floors and has two bedrooms, a full
bathroom, a large fully equipped kitchen complete with a wood fire, and a
comfortable sitting room. As in the other buildings polished wood floors and
furniture enhance the décor and modern touches such as televisions and air-
conditioning have been added.
What was once the mill and grain store has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a
full kitchen in addition to a living and dining room complete with a fireplace.
The old cowshed had been transformed into two self-contained one bedroom
apartments and the old equipment store into a self-contained studio, all
finished in the same smart style.
Within the gated grounds of Casal do Vulcao there is a small children's
playground area separated from the lawns where guests can relax with a
book after a hard day's exploring or enjoy a leisurely evening barbecue.
Bicycles are provided for those wishing to enjoy the local trails and the friendly
owners are able to organise walks or any other excursions their guests might
prefer. Naturally whale watching trips can be arranged as it would be almost
unthinkable to visit Faial without at least attempting a sighting of these
magnificent creatures.
