It is rare to find a hotel where the facilities, service and situation are all so
pleasing. The four star Terceira Mar is just a 15 minute walk from the historic
centre of Angra do Heroismo but as it sits on the ocean's edge looking out
towards the verdant slopes of the Monte Brasil peninsula, guests can imagine
they are in the heart of the countryside.
All but a handful of the 139 rooms have covered balconies facing out across the
palm fringed lawns and truly enormous (800 square metres) swimming pool towards the ocean and the
dormant volcano.
The rooms themselves are spacious and elegant with well-appointed
bathrooms, air-conditioning, cable television, safety deposit boxes and
telephones. Both the bar and restaurant have panoramic ocean views and
outside terraces for the warmer months and are equally popular with both
guests and locals. If the weather is less clement the indoor pool and fitness
centre, games room and beauty salon all provide alternative diversions.
As the hotel is so comfortable and the town, with its historic architecture and
museums, busy waterfront and tempting shops and restaurants is such a
short walk away there is no necessity for guests at the Terceira Mar to hire a
car. It would however be a great shame not to explore the island and enjoy
the diversity of the landscape, investigate the quirkiness of the culture and
maybe join a celebration or watch a 'Tourada a Corda' in one of the many
villages.
